Most needles that will accept yarn, will not go through the hole of a button. If you want to add a button to a yarn project, more than likely you want to use the yarn you created the project with.
If you have a needle threader, there is a solution. You need to be cautious with it because yarn can pull the ends out of these needle threaders. I have broken two. I now hold the metal part of the threader as it's coming through, just so it won't separate from the entire threader.

Place your button onto the threader so the metal is coming through one hole of the button. Place your yarn through and gently pull the yarn through the hole. Once it's even partially through, just pull the strand with your fingers to not strain the threader any more than necessary. Repeat for the next holes until you are able to get your yarn crossed through, leaving enough of a tail to attach the button to your project.
